It was a travesty. The very thing Aidan had been fearing for years was at hand. In his anxious state, he was sitting at a table for two ten minutes earlier than what had been written on the crumpled, abused letter shoved in his pocket. He had little affection towards the piece of paper that had finally commanded his destiny in Pines. It was the physical embodiment of many sleepless nights, cold dread running down his spine whenever he had gotten mail. What had started off as yet another uneventful day in Wayward Pines had quickly turned sour when Aidan found a letter in the mail. Receiving letters in this damned town always made your blood run cold. The possibilities were endless, and some of them were quite frightening. It was only after you opened the envelope with shaking hands that you learned your fate written on the letter.
Unfortunately for Aidan, unfolding the letter didn’t bring relief from the cold dread gnawing at his insides. He had a duty to fulfill, one he had known Wayward Pines would demand from him eventually. Aidan, like the rest of the ill-fated occupants of this purgatory, would have to carry on the town’s legacy in the form of offspring. The day had come for Aidan to get a wife. That poor, unfortunate woman’s name was written on the letter: Ethel Shaffer—soon to be Miller.
At least Pines wasn’t cruel enough to just throw you and your future spouse into a house and call you married, though Aidan didn’t know which would be worse. Getting a little time to adjust was welcome, but at the same time, it was torture knowing what was to come and having to prepare for it. This little engagement dinner, which was mandatory, of course—what wouldn’t be in Pines—at least gave the soon-to-be-wed couples a little time to get to know each other before they would spend the rest of their time in Pines together. His years in Pines had taught Aidan to be loyal to the town. Lay low, and nothing bad would happen—that was the philosophy he had lived his life in Pines by. It also meant that he would have to try to be a suitable husband. If not for the town’s sake, then for his future wife. He was going to be miserable, he already knew that, but that didn’t mean that this Ethel had to be. Aidan wasn’t the most caring person, but intentionally causing someone to be miserable wasn’t something he got joy out of. Life in Pines was difficult enough. He didn’t have to make it worse for someone who didn’t deserve it.

"Excuse me, are you Aidan?"

Aidan’s wait was over as he was approached by a woman whose nervous eyes stopped sweeping the room as they settled on him. Aidan could tell that she wasn’t enthusiastic about their meeting either, considering the way she held her arms close to her body, brows arched in a nervous expression. Well, there was no escaping now. It was time to meet the person he would be sharing the rest of his miserable life in Pines with.
Who Aidan assumed to be Ethel stopped in front of the table Aidan was sitting at, confirming his suspicion. Her large, fearful eyes were pretty, mirroring her quivering voice. Aidan could feel a twinge of pity in his chest, feeling for the poor soul who had the same fate as him. “That’s me”, Aidan muttered rather unenthusiastically, even though he did try to at least not seem miserable. Still there was an air of indifference about him, showing through the cracks in the form of quickly averted eyes—the same way Ethel showed nervousness through her quivering voice. Aidan drew in a deep sigh, gathering himself enough to lift his gaze to meet Ethel’s again. “Ethel, right?”

"I hope you didn't have to wait long", sanat tulivat rauhallisesti ulos, vaikka Ethel kuuli edelleen sen saman pienen värinän äänessään kuin aikaisemmin. Katse hakeutui takaisin Aidanin puoleen, kun kynnys kohdata miehen katse oli taas hetkeksi kadonnut.

Aidan’s attention was somewhere else completely when Ethel settled on the chair opposite him. He couldn’t shake the thoughts from his head. This would be his life from now on. Both of their lives. Pines had doomed them into a miserable marriage with no way out. Aidan couldn’t help but wonder what kinds of expectations this woman in front of him had. Was she hoping for a loving marriage? He couldn’t blame her. Wasn’t that what everyone wanted? But Pines didn’t give any of them a choice. You only had hope.
Aidan returned his attention back to Ethel when she commented on the fact that Aidan had been sitting at the table before she arrived. He shook his head, the woman didn’t have to feel bad about making him wait. She hadn’t even been late. “Nah, I was here early anyways”, Aidan dismissed the woman’s worries. His attention slipped to the other people in the restaurant—there weren’t many, but Aidan would take anything to distract himself from this situation. The other people were waiting for their food or eating, all smiles on their vaguely familiar faces. Aidan was sure he’d seen every resident of this hellscape, though he didn’t know many by name. But during his years in Pines he had crossed paths with many of the unfortunate souls trapped in the town.
Despite Aidan’s reluctance to go through with the marriage, he didn’t really have any other choice. So with a deep sigh, Aidan turned his attention back to Ethel. Leaning back on his chair, Aidan figured that he couldn’t just go ignoring his future wife. This was the beginning of their life together. It for sure didn’t get any better from here, so a bad start to this chapter wasn’t exactly what Aidan wanted. But how could it be anything but? Still, Aidan had to try. “So…how’s life?” he muttered awkwardly. He couldn’t think of anything else to say, even though he already knew the answer. In Pines it could never be anything less than perfect.

Ja pian he jo asuisivat saman katon alla... "Eh, good... I think... Normal like always in Pines", vastaus tuli ulos takellellen hennolla äänellä. "How about yours? Same Pine's way normal or something?" "What's your job?"

The simple question that didn’t have many acceptable answers in Pines seemed to send Ethel almost into a panic. Her rushed, awkward answer made Aidan raise an eyebrow, before looking around subtly, but checking if any of the others at the restaurant had picked up on Ethel’s nervousness. “Don’t”, Aidan muttered under his breath, trying to be as subtle as he could. This woman was clearly relatively new—she knew not to air out her woes, yet her nervousness made her act out of line, blurting out things like she was held at gunpoint. Well, maybe it wasn’t so unexpected, considering that she was practically kidnapped and held here against her will—they all were in this hellhole they dared to call a peaceful town. But in Pines subtlety was the key—act as if nothing was wrong, and you’d be alright. Despite not being exactly happy about having to marry Ethel, Aidan didn’t want any harm to come her way. “Just…relax, okay?” It completely escaped Aidan that his own pissed-off demeanor probably didn’t help the woman at all, even though his words were meant to be comforting. But Aidan wasn’t angry at her—he was angry at Pines, but that didn’t translate well on the outside. Aidan was sitting with his muscular arms crossed, with a subtle, yet tense frown on his face, looking anywhere but Ethel’s direction. He probably wasn’t the model example of a happy Pines’ citizen at that moment, but then again, he was far from a ray of sunshine on a good day, so maybe his behavior would slip through the cracks. Although Ehtel’s first question was left unanswered, Aidan switched the topic by taking advantage of the second question she had asked. Talking about something casual was the only way to move forwards, and what was more casual than their everyday jobs. “I’m a mechanic at the car repair shop”, Aidan stated, returning his attention back to Ethel for the millionth time in their short conversation. “And you?” Aidan’s tone wasn’t exactly the most interested, showing that he seemed to be a little checked out from the situation. At least his attention was on the woman, but his nonchalant attitude really conveyed that he wasn’t too interested, almost as if he was asking her out of politeness, and not genuine curiosity. ethel shaffer
