Late spring of 2011 Idaho State Correctional Center noah miller Stepping out of the doors of the prison felt unreal. Aidan’s stint was finally over, and the moment he’d been counting days to was finally at hand. He half expected that pinching his arm would make him wake up and find himself in the familiar bunk in his cell, with his cellmate snoring loudly and making him feel like ripping his ears out. But this was real. He was actually out, a free man, at last. Though Aidan felt a little seed of doubt, a hint of dread in the back of his mind. Four years of his life he had spent locked up in the building behind him. Four long years he couldn’t get back. And during those four years life on the outside had been moving on. The world didn’t wait for him to be done with his sentence, it changed just like it had been changing before Aidan was locked up. And Noah was now a grown-up, not the awkward teenager he had been when Aidan had lost custody of his brother. Aidan couldn’t deny feeling guilty about getting caught—not because he robbed the house, but because he couldn’t be there for Noah. Sure, Noah had visited him as often as he could, and Aidan had apologized time after time, but guilt still gnawed on his insides. He swore he would stay on the straight and narrow for his brother. He wouldn’t be going back to prison for any reason ever again. Now Aidan feared that things would be awkward between him and his brother. Of course they had been in contact, but now there were no time limits, no awkward surveillance, no going back to their own lives after their meetings. Now Aidan would be invading the life Noah had built for himself while he had been in prison. Of course Noah had assured him that there was no other option—of course Aidan would be staying with his younger brother while he got back on his feet—but Aidan couldn’t help but think that Noah had been just polite, offering to do this out of some sense of duty. After all, Aidan was the one who was supposed to be taking care of Noah. That was how it had been for so long, but now the roles had been reversed. Hovering on the street awkwardly, Aidan wasn’t really sure what to do, or where to go. He had agreed to meet up with Noah, but it seemed like his brother was late. He guessed that Noah hadn’t gotten a driving license or a car, so he would be using public transport. At least Aidan didn’t remember Noah ever mentioning anything like that. Surely that would have been important enough to mention during their meetings. Well, now all Aidan could do was to stand around and wait, even though he wanted to get as far away from the prison as he physically could.

"Hi! Sorry, I'm late the bus took forever. Are you good? I hope I didn't make you wait for too long I should've taken the earlier bus I didn't know this one would take that much overtime to get here I'm so so sorry."

Aidan didn’t have to wait long before he saw Noah running down the street towards him. He nodded a greeting to him and started walking towards his brother, who seemed pretty frantic. Of course, the situation was weird, Aidan, too, had to admit it. “Hey, take it easy, hm?” Aidan advised. “I didn’t even have to wait that long.” Noah really didn’t need to be sorry about anything. He wasn’t the one who abandoned his younger brother—not necessarily by choice, but as the consequences to his actions—leaving him in the care of the foster care system for the rest of his teenage years. Well, at least Noah had been lucky to end up in a good foster family, one that had actually supported Noah. They had even come with Noah on the first few visits to the prison. Though Aidan still remembered the way the parents had looked at him, with disgust in their eyes. Well, maybe that had been just him reading into something that wasn’t there, applying his own inner turmoil to the closest physical representation of his own guilt. He had failed as an older brother, as a guardian, and the people who had been taking care of Noah after he couldn’t anymore were so much better at it than he had ever been. The thought had eaten him alive during the first few years he spent in prison, and he couldn’t deny that it still was whispering in the back of Aidan’s mind.
He was lucky that Noah didn’t blame him for anything, that he understood that Aidan had been simply doing whatever he could to keep them afloat. Aidan would have disowned himself if he had been in Noah’s position. Well, from now on Aidan would do better. He would keep out of trouble, stay on the straight and narrow for his brother. Even though Noah was now an adult, Aidan felt like he had to be there for him. Though it would be the other way around for at least until Aidan would find some work and get back on his feet. He knew that it would be difficult, and he hoped that he was prepared. He wasn’t going back into that life he was leading before he went to prison. The system hadn’t set him straight, but the thought of him abandoning Noah had, and he wasn’t willing to risk it again.
The awkward silence that had set between the brothers lasted a couple of seconds, as Aidan wasn’t really sure what to say. Now they would just go back home? Well, there wasn’t a home to go back to for Aidan. Instead, Noah would be the one who took him in this time. It was so odd, having their roles reversed like this. “I, uh, I’m kinda hungry”, Aidan muttered. “Is the pizza place we used to go to still running?” Aidan didn’t have any idea if Noah lived anywhere near that place these days. He had talked about having his own apartment, but Aidan couldn’t recall if he had mentioned where it was. Still, Aidan craved for some sense of familiarity, anything to ground himself to the fact that he would be starting a new chapter in his life.
