With summer in full swing schools should have closed their doors until fall—though this wasn’t the case when it came to Wayward Pines’ school. It was yet another one of the town’s quirks. Nobody could catch a break, even though it would have been more than welcome. But apparently the town didn’t run on people doing nothing, so Chatan, too, was still buried in papers that had to be graded. Luckily it was Friday, and Chatan figured that he could spare a few days for rest despite the growing amount of responsibilities he had. At least they still had weekends, but Chatan did miss the long summers he used to get off before waking up in Pines. Those seemed like a distant memory, almost something that had only happened in his head. The life he had built for himself, everything lost, left as ghosts haunting Chatan. Drowning his stress into making dinner, Chatan was almost anxious, constantly thinking about when Cassie would get home. What was cooking in the pot was enough for the both of them—they didn’t get along well, but Chatan knew she was working hard. Perhaps this was one of the few olive branches still exchanged between the two. They had gotten few and far between, but there was still some sort of hope that someday they could get along on some level. Yet somehow they always ended up bickering, taking out their frustration on each other. Perhaps they could have been civil if it wasn’t for the underlying air of desperation and hostility in Pines. But the circumstances they were under were unfortunately something neither of them could change.

Post by Cassie Irving on Jul 10, 2023 21:54:03 GMT
Cooking, are we?”

No matter how hard Chatan wished that he could get just a few more moments of solitude, it was inevitable that at one point he heard the rustling of Cassie opening the lock on their front door, and the door opening and closing as an announcement of Cassie’s return from work. With a deep sigh Chatan prepared to face the woman he shared a home with. The exhaustion that had settled over Chatan consumed him, making it near impossible to swallow it down and act like nothing was wrong with the situation they had been put in. It didn’t take long for Cassie to show her face in the kitchen, but she didn’t even get a glance from Chatan. He focused his attention on the food he was making, just as a desperate attempt to keep all the pent up frustration bottled up inside him, hidden in the darkest corners of his mind. Chatan didn’t want to take out his bad feelings on Cassie, but it was always way too easy. Both of them had painted each other as living embodiments of the tragic situation they had been forced into. All it took was one spark, one off-color comment for all of the tensions to unravel in quite the unsavory way. Cassie’s comment about the food was almost enough for Chatan to throw a throney comment her way. Her cold tone of voice seemed ungrateful, but Chatan managed to hold his tongue—if only barely. It didn’t matter if she was grateful for the food he was making—even if she didn’t want to eat what he was making. He was hungry, and he was making the food for himself. Cassie was an afterthought. If she would eat, good for her—if she wouldn’t, it wouldn’t bother Chatan. “Mhm”, Chatan muttered, not even bothering to form a response. Whatever would come out of his mouth wouldn’t be too favorable anyways, he supposed. Instead of focusing on Cassie, Chatan threw away some empty food packages that had accumulated on the kitchen counter as he prepared the food still cooking on the stove. Those few pieces of trash barely fit in the can, though. Despite that, Chatan moved back to the stove, stirring the food a little just to make sure that the heat wasn’t too much, charring their dinner. “Take out the trash, will you?” Chatan asked Cassie without even glancing at her. His tone was just as distant and emotionless as hers had been moments earlier, the plea almost sounding like an order. He hadn’t necessarily meant to order her around, but he simply couldn’t be bothered to find the energy to feign politeness anymore. The week had drained Chatan enough—besides, pretending didn’t help. It never did, as the air around them always seemed to be littered with animosity and hostility. Cassie Irving

”The trash?”
”Well why haven’t you dealt with the trashes earlier. For gods sake, I just-”, Cassien turhautunut tuhahdus ja käsien heilahdus katkaisi lauseen, muttei kuitenkaan estänyt sen jatkamista, ”I just can’t understand why it’s so damn hard to bring trashes out beforehand. You have no idea what I have gone trough today and now this.” Käsiään levitellen Cassie suuntasi paheksuvia katseita Chataniin, sillä nainen oli päättänyt, että keittiössä ruoan kimpussa ahertaja oli ehdottomasti se, jonka olisi pitänyt hoitaa Cassielle vyörytetty tehtävä jo aikoja sitten. Jostain syystä niinkin arkinen pyyntö, kuin roskien vieminen, jonka olisi voinut toteuttaa silkasta ystävällisyydestä, tuntui täysin mahdottomalta -ellei peräti henkilökohtaiselta loukkaukselta joka heitti ensimmäisen kipinän sytytysaralle maaperälle.

Cassie seemed to be just as strained as Chatan was, snapping at Chatan’s rather blunt way to ask her to contribute to their shared housework by taking out the trash. Of course she couldn’t just do that, she had to make a scene out of it. How fantastic, just what Chatan had wanted out of the night. The dream of spending a quiet rest of the day, relaxing as much as he could in this nightmare of a town was washed away as the dam seemed to finally crack. With an annoyed huff Chatan laid the utensil he’d been stirring the food with on the counter, staining the countertop just a little. “You act like you’re the only one allowed to have a rough day”, Chatan snapped back at his wife. Sure, she worked long days at the hospital, but it wasn’t easy dealing with all the teens of the town, as well as having the stress of assignments still having to be graded piling up. Of course Chatan’s timing was a little inconsiderate, as Cassie had just gotten back from work—he could have given her a few moments to rest, but it hadn’t even crossed Chatan’s mind. Besides, the outcome would have probably been the same. “All I’m asking for is that you literally just walk outside and back in. Can’t you do that much?” Chatan complained, turning his attention finally to Cassie. “It wouldn’t kill you, would it?” He was literally making them dinner, having spent the last thirty minutes or so in the kitchen. Now Cassie was complaining about a little trip outside and back. How ungrateful. “I’m here trying to feed us, but you can’t even take out the trash? You do know that we’re supposed to be working together to keep this household running, hm?” Chatan gestured between the two of them, as if to enhance his point of them being in this together.
”Oh, I act as I will, thank you very much for the insight, Chatan. Be my guest and join the misery, if you please.” Cassie sylki sanoja, joita tuskin ehti ajatella aivan loppuun.
”Okay, this whole thing is getting out of hands.” Cassie sulki silmät hetkeksi, kohotti kapeat sormet hieromaan nenänvartta ja kulmien sisäsyrjää. ”Maybe you’re right”, huokaisten vaaleaverikkö asetti kädet ristiin pöydälle, kuin löytäen yhteisymmärryksen kaksikon välillä. ”Maybe my effort is not enough and this whole thing can be fixed if I just bring the trash out. Or, or clean the roof! I could even start from the tiny air vents, since all the crap gets stuck in there. We could even do it together! Say, wouldn’t that be something?”

Cassie didn’t seem too fond on the idea of empathy, and her insistence on acting however she pleased admittedly ground Chatan’s gears. She seemed so immature, living in her own little bubble, not even daring to think of others for a second. But Chatan joined her juvenile antics the second he decided that if she was going to take out her frustration on him, she wouldn’t be the only one. It wouldn’t make him feel any better—it only served to make both of them feel worse—but Chatan couldn’t bear the thought of losing to his wife, even if the battle between them was completely imaginary. A deep, annoyed sigh was all Chatan could muster when Cassie started blowing the situation out of proportion. This was exactly what Chatan had feared before Cassie got home, and now his frustration was spilling over as a result of her provocation. Of course doing chores couldn’t magically fix their broken relationship, but it wouldn’t make things worse, for sure—unlike all the bickering between them. “Nothing can fix this, I know”, Chatan nearly cried out. “But we don’t have many other options, do we? I’d really like to hear them if you have any ideas.” At that point the tone of Chatan’s voice was just as sarcastic as Cassie’s. They were circling a sensitive topic, one that would get many people killed in this town. The very reason they still were together—the reason they were put together in the first place. But it was tough to stay away from the topic, as the fucked up situation they had been put in was the root of all of their problems. So they had to blame everything but Pines for all the struggles it had pushed upon them. Cassie Irving

”I-” Cassie puri huultaan, sillä koko tilanne oli alkanut viedä hänestä viimeisetkin mehut.
”I will bring the trash.” Vastaus tuli huokauksena, turhautuneena sellaisena.

To Chatan’s surprise, Cassie seemed to give in surprisingly easily. Perhaps she was more exhausted than usual, allowing for a ceasefire in their feud for a moment of peace. Or rather whatever was closest to peace in Pines. “That’s what I thought”, Chatan stated dryly once Cassie seemed to fold. Perhaps it would have been wisest if he dropped the matter completely, but all of the frustration leaking out was always difficult to put back to rest. The strain this town put on everyone was crushing, and they couldn’t even take comfort in the fact that they were there together, leaving everyone feeling isolated. It was as if there was a wall between the married couple living under this roof. At least Cassie had agreed to take out the trash. It felt like a small victory—instead of going for each other’s throats, they split some chores with only a little scuffle. Chatan felt like he could turn back to the food he was making. Cassie would take care of the trash, and Chatan didn’t need to worry about that. He would take care of everything else, being too tired to fight over the dishes or anything else. The past week had Chatan wanting nothing else but curling up in bed, hiding away from everything, and those were exactly his plans once he got some food to fill his growling stomach. Cassie Irving
